A number of local business owners and cooks have appeared recently on the television magazine program Mass Appeal, which airs daily from 11 a.m. to noon on Channel 22 in Springfield.

One of them, writer Tinky Weisblat of Hawley, has become a regular in the past few months.

“I was first approached by the show a couple of years ago,” she recalls. “A producer had seen my food blog and wanted me to come in and try a cooking segment. At that time I was taking care of my late mother, however, and I couldn’t really leave her to go whip up food in Chicopee, where the studio is located.

“This past spring I came across that old invitation and emailed Mass Appeal to ask whether the producers would like me to appear on the show and talk about my new book, Pulling Taffy Five minutes later I got a call from co-host Seth Stutman. He wanted me to talk about the book—and to cook as well.”

Tinky’s first segments—about caregiver stress, asparagus, and rhubarb—went over well. “I guess the gang at Mass Appeal noticed that I’m not exactly shy,” she says with a wry smile. “We had a blast, and they invited me back, especially to cook, again and again.”

In her most recent appearance she appeared in full Halloween regalia and prepared pumpkin soup (from a recipe by Polly Bartlett of Buckland) and spider-web whoopie pies

Tinky is headed to Virginia for the winter, but she and hosts Ashley Kohl and Seth Stutman are working on a Skype appearance or two to give viewers their Tinky fix until she can return to Massachusetts in the spring.

“Of course, I hope this will help my career as a cookbook author,” she admits. “Mostly, however, I just have a lot of fun with Seth and Ashley. I have a feeling they’re young enough to be my children, but we’re kindred spirits. All three of us are performers at heart.”
