Shelburne Falls a Great Place in America

Some 175 residents and people who love Shelburne Falls crowded into the Shelburne-Buckland Community Center to celebrate and honor the village on October 18th.  The American Planning Association named the two-town village one of 15 “Great Places in America” at the gathering by presenting its award to the Towns of Buckland and Shelburne and the Greater Shelburne Falls Area Business Association (GSFABA) which make up the Shelburne Falls Area Partnership.

The event was organized by GSFABA to celebrate the residents, businesses, nonprofit organizations, area towns and agencies that have contributed to making Shelburne Falls a special place and preserving the village cache and quality.

Representative Steve Kulik honored Shelburne Falls by being the MC for the evening.  Keynote speaker, John Mullin, Professor Emeritus of Urban Planning at UMASS, spoke to the quality of the village by describing it as “unique, special and distinctive” in character.

Through GSFABA and the Partnership, Shelburne Falls has earned numerous designations that help the three partners raise funding for capital improvements and preservation of the villages historic architecture and intact “main streets,” promotes West County as a “great place” to live, work and stay, and supports the region’s creative sector.

Awards include designation of the village as a Creative Community, the establishment and expansion of the Cultural District on both sides of the Deerfield River that mirrors the Business District in Buckland and Shelburne, and its new identity as a Great Place in America.
